Christian Eriksen needs to raise his game after a dreadful display in the Champions League for Tottenham on Wednesday night.
That is the verdict of ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker Noel Whelan, who has told Football Insider how the playmaker looks a shadow of his former self.
Eriksen is out of contract at Tottenham at the end of the season and his future is up in the air even though he will remain at the club until at least January amid incessant transfer speculation.
Eriksen played the full 90 minutes in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Olympiakos despite a poor pass completion rate and a failure to impose himself on a side last season’s runners-up were expected to beat, especially after going 2-0 up through Harry Kane and Lucas Moura.
“Something’s not quite right with Christian Eriksen,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Is it the contract situation? It seems inevitable he will leave and maybe his head’s not in the right place.
“He’s a brilliant player, no doubt about that, but he’s looked off the pace, lazy, even. He’s always quite economical with his movement, but it’s looked like he wasn’t trying at times.
“Pochettino will be worried, as there are few players who can do what Eriksen does, and certainly he’s irreplaceable at Tottenham.”
Mauricio Pochettino has admitted Eriksen came close to leaving the London giants in the recently-closed transfer and left him out of the side at the start of the campaign before reinstating him when it was clear he had not secured a move.
The 27-year-old is free to sign a pre-contract with an overseas club from January and then leave Tottenham on a free next summer if he does not agree an extension to his deal.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club are lining up a sensational £60million offer.
