Pundit shares '100%' Kieran Trippier claim as details emerge from Newcastle United

Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier is “100%” in line for a starting berth during England’s World Cup campaign – even if he plays at left-back.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Three Lions are “better off” with the “experienced” 32-year-old on the pitch in Qatar.

Trippier was confirmed as part of the England squad for the World Cup on Thursday (10 November) but will face competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker in his natural right-back berth.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw is the only obvious choice for Gareth Southgate at left-back.

As per Transfermarkt, Trippier has only lined up on the left once in his club career – but has played the position in eight of his 37 England caps.

The Newcastle captain has provided one goal and four assists in 16 outings for the Magpies this term.

Whelan insisted Trippier has been the “difference” for Eddie Howe’s side since his arrival from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in January.

When asked if he could play at left-back over Shaw in Qatar, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he can play either side.

“He’s done it plenty of times for England over the years, so we know he’s got the trust of Gareth Southgate.

“I think he has 100% got to play, no matter what side he’s on.

“He’s got competition experience for England, Champions League experience – and he’s been the difference for Newcastle since he’s come in.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s on the right or left – England are better off with Kieran Trippier on the pitch.”
