Pundit shares 'big' Elliot Anderson claim after crushing Newcastle United blow
Elliot Anderson has been handed a “big” chance to stake a claim in the Newcastle United squad after an injury to Jonjo Shelvey.
That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid
Anderson, 19, was given a place on the bench for Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest though he did not make it onto the pitch.
He was there in place of Shelvey, who, as revealed by Eddie Howe on Friday (12 August), will miss 12 weeks of action after undoing surgery.
Kenny claims Anderson must capitalise on this chance.
“That’s what happens in football, one door closes and another one opens,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Anderson now has the big opportunity because Shelvey is going to be out for at least 12 months.
“He is a young lad who has done well out on loan. Eddie Howe was always going to give him that chance by the sounds of things.
“Now he has an even bigger chance because Shelvey is an important player for Newcastle and he is going to miss half of the season.
“He is one to keep an eye on and let’s see how many games he gets.”
Anderson joined Bristol Rovers on loan in January and went on to score eight goals and register five assists in 21 appearances.
He also scored the all-important seventh goal in a 7-0 win over Scunthorpe on 7 May, sealing the Gas’ promotion to League One.
