Pundit suggests '£50m' Newcastle United signing as Callum Wilson deal agreed

Newcastle United would need to shell out £50million to replace talismanic striker Callum Wilson.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid an update on the striker’s future.

On Monday (3 October), David Ornstein of The Athletic reported Wilson has signed a new two-year deal at Newcastle with the option of a further extension.

The 30-year-old remains a key player for the Magpies and has scored three goals in four Premier League outings this season.

Wilson has already missed four games through injury this season after missing 19 top-flight games with a hamstring complaint last term.

Despite his injury record, Kenny insists this new deal is not a risky move by Newcastle.

“I don’t think it’s a risk at all,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“To replace him in this day and age you are talking about a lot of money. I know he is 30 years old but he proved at the weekend when he scored that first goal, that got Newcastle going.

“It’s a good move. I’m sure further down the line they will look to replace him, no disrespect. For now, it’s a very clever move for him.

“In this market, you are looking at £50million to replace someone like Wilson who has a record of almost one every two games for Newcastle.”

Newcastle broke their transfer record to sign Alexander Isak during the 2022 summer window.

The Sweden international is currently injured but scored two goals in his first three games for the club.
