Pundit suggests when David de Gea will quit Man United after key update

David de Gea has been backed to take a wage cut and sign a new Man United deal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton suggested De Gea could benefit from the competition a new goalkeeper would bring at United for the “next couple of seasons”.

The 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of this month but has been in talks over a new contract at Old Trafford and is likely to have to take a hefty wage cut in order to do so.

As relayed by the Mirror (30 May), Erik ten Hag has refused to confirm whether De Gea will be his number one keeper next season even if he pens a new deal and has been eyeing up potential replacements.

Despite several big errors this season, the shot-stopper earned himself the Premier League Golden Glove for the 2022-23 season.

When asked if De Gea is able to step up to the challenge of another top keeper to compete with, Hutton told Football Insider:I think he will be,

That is probably what has made him better throughout his career, having people pushing him.

I do not think there has been that much competition for him at Man United over the years because he has been outstanding for that period of time. Has he dipped? Of course.

I think his wages have been the stumbling block but it seems like he is willing to take a cut. I think competition is always good but I think he will have another couple of seasons there before he moves.
