Paul Robinson has insisted "the worst thing" Man United could do is strip Harry Maguire of the captaincy.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England number one said swapping the armband would only damage the confidence of the 28-year-old.

Maguire has come under huge scrutiny for his performances this season.

As shown on talkSPORT (November 7th), a number of pundits and journalists are unhappy with the United's captain's comments after recent losses.

Alex Crook fumed over Maguire's tweet after the loss to Manchester City on Saturday and labelled his performances this season as "a disgrace".

According to the Daily Mail's Chris Wheeler, Cristiano Ronaldo has been "shocked" by how far standards at the club have dropped.

When asked by Football Insider if the Portugal captain should take the armband off Maguire, Robinson said: "It doesn't matter who's captain.

"If you are a leader, you lead on the pitch and in the dressing room anyway. It does not matter who wears the armband on the day.

"The ideal situation is having 11 captains on the field. You don't always get that though because of the way players are.

"You will not help Harry Maguire by taking the captaincy off him. He is not in playing well and it would be highlighted by him losing the captaincy.

Man United

"Ronaldo is a born leader, a born winner and a born champion. He can influence that team without the armband.

"I'm sure he'd be the first person to say the worst thing you can do is strip Maguire of the captaincy."
