Pundit 'surprised' as Arsenal reportedly swoop for 'very strange' Bellerin replacement
Noel Whelan is “surprised” to hear Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Jonjoe Kenny from Everton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker said it would be “strange” if the Gunners signed the 24-year-old as he has struggled for game time at Goodison Park.
According to the Daily Mail (20 June), the London club have “discussed” making a move for Kenny with Hector Bellerin potentially leaving this summer.
Kenny spent the second half of the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Celtic Park having failed to make an impact on Everton’s first team.
The Liverpool-born star has just one year left on his contract on Merseyside so would likely be a cheap option for Arsenal at right-back.
When asked by Football Insider for his verdict on Arsenal’s reported interest, Whelan said: “That is a strange one.

“Bellerin has been at Arsenal a long time and it looks like now is the time for him to move on.
“Is Kenny an upgrade on him or even as good as him? I’m not so sure.
“The situation at Everton, manager-wise, is up in the air at the moment so I’m not sure if he would be allowed to leave. That is a very strange one for me to get my head around.
“A very difficult one to put your finger on when you think about it as he has struggled to get in the Everton team and didn’t pull up any trees at Celtic. It’s surprising to say the least.”
