Pundit tells Johnston to complete Celtic exit after Aberdeen update

Alan Hutton has urged Mikey Johnston to push for a loan move out of Celtic this month amid reported interest from Aberdeen.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 22-year-old would benefit from regular game time after a hit-and-miss season so far.

As reported by the Daily Record on Sunday night (23 January), Aberdeen are considering launching a loan move for Johnston before the end of the window.

Scott Brown has reportedly offered up a glowing reference as the Dons run the rule over their shortlist.

Hutton has suggested Johnston may want to fight for his place under Ange Postecoglou.

However, he suggested a temporary switch would be better for his development.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think a loan move would be a decent move. Obviously, he’s kind of fallen down the pecking order.

“We know how good he can be and what he’s capable of. For him, it’s really about playing football regularly to get to that next level.

“It’s really down to him. Does he want to stay and fight it out and try push his way in? That’s up to him.

“Or would he rather get the game time that he probably needs? I think that’d be the better idea, with a view to coming back at the end of the season.

“Having been playing during the second half of the season, you’re feeling fit, ready go in pre-season.

“I think that would really help him and help his development moving forward.”

Johnston has made 18 appearances across all competitions this season.

However, only four of those have come as starts.
