Pundit: This may be real reason Man City unwilling to bid £50m+ for Marc Cucurella

Frank McAvennie has suggested Man City will not push the boat out to sign Marc Cucurella as the defender would not be a guaranteed starter at the Etihad.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker said the 24-year-old would struggle for game time under Pep Guardiola.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (3 August), Chelsea are set to beat City to the signing of the Spanish left-back.

The Blues are said to have tabled an offer of over £50million after agreeing personal terms with the player.

Chelsea are said to be waiting for Brighton to make their decision.

Cucurella has four years remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium.

When asked for his assessment of the latest, McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen: “If he goes somewhere else then he’ll be a mainstay.

If he goes to another team, maybe not Man City, if he went to Man United he’d be playing all the time but at Man City he won’t.

Doesn’t matter what position goes in to Man City, you go in and you’re not going to get as much game time as you would like.

He’s a good player but is he going to get in every week? No, I don’t think that’ll happen.

Cucurella made 35 appearances for Brighton across all competitions last season.

In those outings he scored one goal and provided two assists.
