Pundit tips Aston Villa to announce 'surprise' signing after 'shock' development

Aston Villa could announce a surprise signing before the end of the transfer window after the capture of Philippe Coutinho.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider following the attacker’s arrival at Villa Park.

On 7 January, Aston Villa confirmed the signing of Coutinho from Barcelona on loan until the end of the season.

Villa have also confirmed the deal includes the option to buy the Brazilian.

Kenny has hailed Steven Gerrard for pulling off the move and predicted more high-profile signings at Villa Park.

“Gerrard has some pull,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Villa is also another club with a lot of money. It is an attractive club to be at.

“I can only see them spending more and more and becoming a better team.

“Players will see Coutinho signing for them and that will make them think it is something they could do.

“They are building a very good squad there, no one thought they would sign Coutinho, it was a shock.

“You wonder if they can spring another surprise signing on us at some point.

“You can’t rule it out, it’s an exciting club to be at. I think the last few weeks of this window are going to be very interesting for Villa.”

Coutinho scored a late equaliser in Saturday’s (15 January) 2-2 draw with Man United.

This was his first Premier League outing since he played for Liverpool in a 2-1 win over Leicester on 30 December 2017.
