Pundit tips Newcastle to launch Ake bid as talk dismissed 'he's going straight to West Ham'
Noel Whelan has tipped Newcastle United to rival West Ham for the signing of Manchester City defender Nathan Ake in January.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker suggested Eddie Howe would be keen on reuniting with the 26-year-old after their days at Bournemouth.
As reported by 90 Min (2 December), West Ham are likely to push for a loan-to-buy deal for Ake next month as David Moyes looks for defensive reinforcements.
The same outlet reported last month (12 November) Howe has shortlisted Ake as a top target following his appointment at Newcastle.
However, Football Insider revealed (27 November) Manchester City are not planning on listening to offers for the defender.
Despite City’s reluctance to let him go, Whelan has tipped Newcastle to test the waters and rival West Ham for his capture.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Look, who was the manager at Bournemouth when he was there? Eddie Howe.
“He’s got some real issues right now at centre-half. Let’s not rule that one out and think he’s going to go straight to West Ham.
“He’d be a great signing for anybody. Somebody with experience of the Premier League.
“He needs to be playing week in, week out if he’s got any aspirations of breaking into the Netherlands squad for the World Cup.”
Ake has only started seven times across all competitions for City this season.
He has the likes of John Stone, Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte ahead of him in the pecking order.
He has also struggled for minutes for the Netherlands, with just four appearances in his country’s last 18 games.
