Pundit: Tottenham making 'big mistake' as Gold reveals two more senior players up for sale
Tottenham would be making a “big mistake” if they allowed Eric Dier to leave the club this summer, according to Noel Whelan.
The ex-Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, praised the 27-year-old but admitted he was far from his best in the 2020-21 campaign.
According to Football.London‘s Alasdair Gold (July 25th), Spurs are willing to listen to offers for Dier and Davinson Sanchez in this window, with the latter the more likely to depart.
The pair appear surplus to requirements in north London as Nuno Espirito Santo and Fabio Paratici look to rebuild Spurs’ squad.
Whelan suggested Sanchez is the only centre-back Tottenham should be looking to move on this summer.
“I would keep Eric Dier and sell Sanchez,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Sanchez hasn’t hit the heights. He has been inconsistent and at times a hinderance to Tottenham. Some of his defending has been very questionable.
“We didn’t see the best of Eric Dier last season but there is a good player in there.
“He knows the league, he knows the club and he is a very versatile player. I think it would be a big mistake to get rid of him, I really do. He can play in the defence or in the midfield which is a big plus point.
“Dier is better than Sanchez, without a shadow of a doubt. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sanchez goes. I haven’t seen enough of him since he’s been there.”
