Pundit verdict on Celtic 'replacing' Carl Starfelt after 'interesting' news

Alan Hutton has claimed Ange Postecoglou has “no need” to change the back four at Celtic despite Carl Starfelt’s injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Rangers defender suggested Starfelt will be first choice this season even though he is set to miss their opening fixture due to injury.

STV news reported (30 July) that the 27-year-old will miss the Hoops’ opening game of the season after picking up a hamstring injury.

The defender returned to training on Friday (29 July) but is still said to be short of match fitness.

The Hoops welcomed centre-back Mortiz Jenz from FC Lorient on a season-long loan deal in July.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Starfelt’s position at Parkhead, Hutton said: “I think for the start of the season he would’ve been first choice.

Going off the back of last season, they won the league, so I don’t think there’s any real need to change it. I think [Greg] Taylor will start the season also.

But, you’ve got people breathing down your neck and that’s what Ange wants to really kick on. I think that back four will probably stay the same until otherwise.

Maybe people hit a bad patch in form and then you’ve got that replacement to come in. It’ll be an interesting one because everybody is fighting for that starting place.

They’re all good enough so they’re going to push each other all the way and it will be a good contest.
