Pundit verdict on journalist's Marco Verratti transfer update after Man City man's stance confirmed

Kevin Campbell has poured cold water on the idea of Man City signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti prior to the transfer window closing.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker suggested the 29-year-old is too similar to City midfielders Rodri and Kalvin Phillips.

Bernardo Silva’s future at the Etihad is uncertain amid interest from Barcelona.

According to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, via Si (7 August), agents inside football believe Verratti could end up replacing Silva at the Etihad should he move to Barcelona.

Pep Guardiola has already made clear his feelings towards Verratti.

As quoted by Eurosport (29 September 2021), Guardiola said he was “in love” with the Italy international after his “exceptional” performance against City in the Champions League.

When asked by Football Insider if he could see Verratti lining up for the Premier League champions next month, Campbell issued a three-word verdict: “Not for me.

“I like Veratti. I think he is brilliant.

“But you have to remember they have just signed Kalvin Phillips. I don’t see Veratti fitting in. Rodri, Phillips and Verratti all like to play deep.

“I like Verratti but I just don’t see that happening at City.

“If they were to lose Bernardo Silva, they might feel like they need another midfielder. Could Verratti play a bit further forward? Maybe. He is good enough technically.

“I just don’t see it coming off though, Verratti. I don’t see that one.”
