Pundit on Liverpool potentially signing 'next Virgil van Dijk' in January after journalist's reveal

Kevin Campbell has suggested Liverpool will struggle to find a player capable of making a Virgil van Dijk-esque impact in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said such a player would likely prove too expensive in the mid-season window.

The Reds are in the market for a centre-midfielder ahead of January.

Writing in The Times (31 October), journalist Paul Joyce revealed the club are looking for a signing who can “make the same impression as Van Dijk.”

Van Dijk moved to Anfield in January 2018 and had an immediate impact on Jurgen Klopp’s side.

When asked by Football Insider if such a signing would be possible in January, Campbell said: “Look, you tell me which club does not want a January signing that will have an impact like Virgil van Dijk.

“Every team would want that. You want every signing to have an impact and be brilliant. It doesn’t work out like that though. The difficulty is finding these players for a somewhat reasonable price.

“Van Dijk and Alisson [Becker] changed the whole landscape at Anfield. They have been colossal for the club for the last four years. It has been an incredible run.

“The team have dipped now though. There are injuries and a loss of form to deal with.

“Of course Liverpool would love someone to come in and make a massive splash like Van Dijk did in January. It is another thing finding that player.”
