Pundit verdict on Liverpool signing Jude Bellingham amid '£50m' Naby Keita verdict

Liverpool desperately need to strengthen their midfield but it is not worth spending “£50million” on a “panic buy” this summer, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Liverpool are better off waiting for Jude Bellingham than signing another Naby Keita who is not good enough.

The Times‘ Paul Joyce reported last week (16 June) that the Reds are prepared to wait until next summer to bring in midfield reinforcements.

Football Insider reported earlier this year (22 April) that Borussia Dortmund have told Liverpool that Bellingham, 18, is not for sale this summer as they work to try to persuade him to sign a new contract.

“[Darwin] Nunez looks like a top player but he’s got things he’s probably got to work on,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s a good young player but he’s not the finished article so you don’t know how he’s going to react to the Premier League. They’ve lost [Sadio] Mane.

“I feel like midfield was a position they had to strengthen. Keita is not the answer, he’s been poor. [Jordan] Henderson is getting older now he’s not going to be as effective, Thiago gets injured a lot and [James] Milner is 36, he’s not going to be playing as many minutes.

“It’s an area they know they need to sort out. Maybe Jurgen Klopp doesn’t want to get anyone. If it’s not Bellingham, if it’s not his preferred target it’s not worth bringing in anybody as a panic buy.

“Bellingham is definitely worth waiting for. Man City couldn’t get Harry Kane and they waited, didn’t play a striker.

“Sometimes you wait for the right person rather than waste money. They spent £50million on Keita, that’s been a waste of money.”
