Pundit verdict on Mohamed Salah 'downing tools' after journalist's Liverpool update

Noel Whelan is adamant Mohamed Salah will continue to excel for Liverpool next season.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker said the 29-year-old is not the type of player to “down tools” despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

According to the Mirror‘s Simon Mullock (18 June), the Reds are not worried about Salah’s standards slipping despite the fact he is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

The forward joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 and extended his contract in 2018.

Salah has been an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s side and finished as the Premier League’s top scorer last term.

When asked by Football Insider if he feared Salah’s standards would slip next season, Whelan said: “I think he’ll just get on with the job if he is still there come the start of the season.

“I still think something will happen. Once you get down to a certain point in the contract and a move doesn’t come off then it just makes more sense to see the season out.

“It’s not like Liverpool are going to be struggling at the bottom of the table. They’ll be up there with the best of them.

“He’ll be professional about it there’s not doubt about that. I don’t think he’s one of those players that will down tools. I think he’ll work hard and he’ll enjoy the last season.

“I’m sure there’s going to be more success for Liverpool, given the signings they’ve made already this year.

“But I think for both parties if the player really does want to leave it’s best they get a deal done for them.
