Alan Hutton has suggested Stephen Welsh could be rotated with Mortiz Jenz in the heart of the Celtic defence.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers right-back said Welsh will be used mostly as back up but can be called upon to start if needed.

As reported by Football Scotland (12 September), Carl Starfelt, 27, is facing a month on the sidelines after picking up a knock in the 4-0 win over Rangers.

The centre-back was forced off in the early stages of the second half with a knee injury.

The Sweden international was left out of the squad for the Champions League clash against Real Madrid last Tuesday (6 September).

Starfelt missed the opening two games of the season after picking up a hamstring injury on international duty.

Summer signing Jenz has filled in alongside defence stalwart Cameron Carter-Vickers this season.

When asked if Welsh could be rotated with Jenz while Starfelt is injured, Hutton told Football Insider: "Yeah possibly.

Celtic

"I think at this moment in time he’ll definitely be back up. Jenz has come in and done really well. They look a really good pairing together, Carter-Vickers and Jenz, so I don’t see it being a problem at this time.

"Of course I think he’s come in and done well before, he’s never let the team down so he’s a really good backup for those two if they continue and continue to play well at this moment in time."
