Pundit verdict on senior midfielder quitting Rangers after Bacuna deal completed

Noel Whelan has tipped Steven Gerrard not to sell any midfielders at Rangers despite the arrival of Juninho Bacuna from Huddersfield.

The former Aberdeen midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the vast array of options all offer different attributes to the Light Blues’ side.

Rangers confirmed the capture of Bacuna last week (19th August).

He joins John Lundstram in bolstering the midfield options at Ibrox this summer.

Gerrard also has Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, Nnamdi Ofoborh, Scott Arfield and Stephen Kelly to call upon.

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips insisted he was “certain” one, if not two, would be moved on.

However, Whelan suggested Gerrard would not get rid of any before the August 31 transfer deadline.

Asked if he thought Rangers could keep all their midfielders, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “In my opinion, yeah. He’s gone into the market to get more midfield players. He feels like he needs more.

“That’s where it is for him because don’t forget, you’ve got different midfield players there.

“You’ve got defensive midfield players, you’ve got your central midfield players, you’ve got your more attacking midfield players.

“It’s not like you only need two central midfield players these days. You’ve got diamonds that you play, a holding midfield player that you play.

“You’ve got attacking wide midfield players like Kent as well that can play in that wide area.

“You need that strength and depth in there and that quality of players. Don’t forget the amount of games they’ll be playing. Hopefully, they’ll be in the European competition as well.

“You need to put out a team that’s strong enough but with changes that you may need to make because of the amount of games they’re playing all season.

“He’s strengthening in areas which control games and win games for you.”
