Pundit verdict on Tottenham signing 'world-class' defender after Sky's Zouma update

Paul Robinson has claimed Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma would be a “good signing” for Tottenham this summer.

The ex-Spurs keeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Lilywhites need two “world-class” centre-backs.

Sky Sports reported yesterday (August 17th) Tottenham and West Ham are interested in signing the France international.

The broadcaster claim Chelsea will command a fee of around £25million for the former Saint-Etienne man.

Tottenham have already wrapped up the arrival of one centre-half this window, with Cristian Romero joining from Atalanta on an initial loan.

Robinson admitted centre-back is still one of Spurs’ “weakest positions”.

He suggested Zouma would be a welcome addition to the squad.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Sanchez and Dier were very good at the weekend against Manchester City.

“However, centre-back is one of the weakest positions in the squad.

“[Cristian] Romero has come in, I saw him play at Copa America – he’s a leader.

“I think you’d want someone to come in who could play next to him. Zouma would be a good signing. He’s got a lot of Premier League experience.

“Dier is versatile so could work well in a three at the back system if Nuno decides to revert to that.

“Spurs need two world-class centre-halves and at the moment they haven’t got that.”

Zouma’s contract at Stamford Bridge runs until 2023.

He played 36 times in all competitions last season as Chelsea won the Champions League and secured a top-four finish in the league.
