Noel Whelan has urged Everton to pursue a deal to sign the “fantastic” Kieran Trippier this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the right-back could form an exciting partnership with Lucas Digne on either side of the Toffees’ defence.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Everton have been offered the chance to sign Trippier this summer and are considering making a move.
The 30-year-old’s contract at Atletico expires next summer and he could be in line for a return to England.
He played 107 times in the Premier League for Burnley and Tottenham before moving to Spain.
Whelan insisted Trippier’s signing would have the Everton faithful “licking their lips”.
Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “How impressive would that squad look on paper?
“As a team, getting that experience, that creativity, getting that player can do that natural right wing-back role, box-to-box, set-pieces as well.
“Lucas Digne on one side, it would be a fantastic signing. Two natural full-backs raiding up either side, offering set-piece takers as well.
“I mean look, wow. Everton fans will be licking their lips if they can get this signing over the line.”
Seamus Coleman is Everton’s first-choice senior right-back, although the 32-year-old has suffered with fitness problems this term.
As such, centre-backs Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate and winger Alex Iwobi have all stepped in as makeshift options.
Meanwhile, Trippier has played 23 times in La Liga this season, with Atletico leading the title race.
He was banned for 10 weeks in December for a breach of betting rules relating to his move to Spain.
