Sources: Fortuna Sittard respond to six-figure QPR bid for Cox

QPR have had a bid rejected for Fortuna Sittard left-back George Cox, Football Insider understands.

The London club are in the market for a new senior defender who can slot in on the left side of their back line.

A recruitment source told Football Insider that QPR have submitted an official offer of around £500,000 but it has been knocked back by Dutch outfit Fortuna.

Cox, 23, began his career with Brighton but failed to make a senior appearance before moving permanently to Fortuna last summer where he signed a four-year deal.

The diminutive full-back made his senior debut in January 2019 while on loan with then-League Two outfit Northampton Town.

At the outset of the 2019-20 campaign, Cox was on the move again after joining Eredivisie side Fortuna on a season-long.

Fortuna took up their option to make the deal permanent after a season in which Cox impressed across 21 appearances at left-back.

Fortuna finished 11th in the Dutch top-flight the following season as Cox notched an impressive 10 goal contributions (five goals and five assists) across 33 appearances.

QPR played five at the back for much of 2020-21 with the left-wing-back position shared by Niko Hamalainen and Lee Wallace.

Wallace signed a one-year contract extension in May but, at 33, QPR may be looking to the future in their pursuit of Cox.

The Rs have already been busy in the transfer market this summer having secured deals for Andre Dozzell, Jordy de Wijs, Charlie Austin and Sam Field.

The West London outfit will harbour promotion aspirations after finishing the season strongly under Mark Warburton in 2020-21.

They ultimately finished nine points off the play-offs in 9th place.
