Rangers have held talks with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig as the German team look to complete a £6million swoop for Barrie McKay, according to a report.

The Daily Record claim that the ambitious side have identified the 22-year-old winger as a top talent, after impressing sporting director Ralf Rangnick during the two sides’ friendly last week.

Despite losing 4-0 to Leipzig, McKay produced an impressive performance and Leipzig are now interested in bringing the Gers’ number 19 to Germany.

Having a hand in 12 goals this season, McKay has found the back of the net three times against Hearts, St. Johnstone and Annan Athletic as well as turning provider on nine occasions. He’s seen as an assist master after regularly setting up goals, including five in just seven League Cup games this season.

Currently flying high in second in the Bundesliga behind champions Bayern Munich, Leipzig’s transfer system of buying up-and-coming talents has worked wonders.

A move for McKay would see him team up with fellow Scottish winger Oliver Burke, who moved to Leipzig in the summer from Nottingham Forest for a fee of £13million.

A product of the 54-time Scottish champions youth academy, McKay has been one of the first names on Mark Warburton’s team sheet this season as he stars on the left wing.

Football Insider verdict:

Although losing McKay would be a huge blow to the Gers attacking prowess, Warburton’s side would be bringing in £6million of profit to Ibrox that could be reinvested if they act quickly this month. The Gers have had to settle for loans and free transfers in their first season back in the Scottish Premiership, which has seen some of their summer recruits fail to impress at Ibrox. The likes of Philippe Senderos, Matt Gilks and Joe Dodoo have all struggled for game time, while Joey Barton’s move resulted in disaster as he returned to Burnley. Using the £6million that could be got for McKay could see the Gers add to their squad with real quality, as they look to build a side that is capable of challenging Old Firm rivals Celtic.
