Rangers ace named in SPFL team of the week after Hamilton demolition

By Harvey Byrne

Rangers forward Joe Garner has been named in the Scottish Professional Football League team of the week after the Gers demolished Hamilton 6-0 on Saturday.

The 28-year-old striker started from the bench in the Scottish Cup tie before coming on for veteran Kenny Miller at half time.

With the scoreline stood at 1-0 when he entered the pitch it is clear that Garner had a big say in the end result and his hat-trick ensured the famous Glasgow side’s progression into the semi-finals.

Garner’s performance has been overshadowed by his dreadful challenge on Dougie Imrie in the match since, but on Tuesday afternoon he received credit as the only Rangers man to be named in the SPFL team of the week, as announced on their official Twitter account.

Garner made the switch to Ibrox in the summer from Championship side Preston for a fee of £1.5million.

He has since returned just seven goals and two assists in 27 appearances, but many will now be hoping his three goals can start up a scoring run.

The powerful striker will be missing from Sunday’s clash with Rangers due to suspension, but he will be back to face Hamilton once more in the league on 18 March.

In other Rangers news, Kieran Tierney has brought up the point gap ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm meeting.
