Rangers and Celtic joined in hunt for stylish defender as battle intensifies, six-figure bid tabled - report
Rangers and Celtic have been joined in their hunt to sign Dundee defender Jack Hendry by four Premier League clubs, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claimed on their live transfer blog on Tuesday [02:49pm] that Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and West Ham are all interested in Hendry, 22, and are due to send out a scout to keep close tabs on him when Dundee play against Hibernian on Wednesday night.
Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic are also set to send their recruitment experts out to Dens Park in order to continue their pursuit of the former Wigan defender.
It is understood that the Bhoys have already had a six-figure bid worth £300,000 rejected for the stylish ball-playing defender and Brendan Rodgers has already hailed the player for his solid defensive performances.
“The boy Hendry at the back I thought was excellent,’ said the ex-Liverpool boss, as quoted by the Mail. “He’s quick and strong and is a good size.”
It now seems that the battle for Hendry’s signature is intensifying as the January transfer window nears it’s end.
The Daily Star has reported that Dundee are looking to pocket £1.5million for the centre-back – a lot more than Celtic’s opening bid.
Football Insider verdict
Dundee look as though they may be losing Hendry this month and it also seems like Rangers and Celtic will fail to land him. The lure of the Premier League may prove too much for the Dens Park ace and with £1.5million proving to be peanuts to them sides, it is more than likely a bid will go in. That is too much for Rangers and Celtic to spend on someone who is unproven, but it is a chance worth taking for those who are much more well off in terms of finances. Dundee will perhaps want the move done sooner rather than later though so they can reinvest that healthy fee in the squad.
