Rangers are close to making Birmingham City playmaker Greg Stewart their third summer signing, according to the Scottish Sun.
The newspaper claim the Glasgow giants are in advanced talks to sign Stewart on a pre-contract deal ahead of his agreement with the English Championship club expiring at the end of the season.
The Scottish Sun report Rangers want to add Stewart, 29, to their stable of new signings, with free transfer deals already in place for Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones and Motherwell forward Jake Hastie.
Football Insider verdict:
Stewart is yet another freebie for Rangers, who have had mixed results in plundering the free transfer market during the Dave King era. Some deals have worked out brilliantly (Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield). Others have bombed (Niko Kranjcar, Joey Barton). Like those four, the Light Blues are attracted by Stewart due to his experience, pedigree and availability, as well as relative cheapness. The attacking midfielder also has the added attraction of being proven in the Scottish Premiership and knowing the league well. HIs parent club is Birmingham but the player has spent this season on loan at, firstly, Kilmarnock and, then, Aberdeen. He was far more successful for Steve Clarke’s side, scoring and creating goals during their flying start to the campaign. Back at Pittodrie after spending last season at the club, Stewart has been less effective, but he has remained a regular starter and, ironically, is set to face Rangers this weekend.
