Rangers could sign Goldson replacement in January after Kieran Maguire's £5m transfer reveal - Hutton

Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers could use their limited transfer funds to sign a new centre-back in January.

The former Gers full-back and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Light Blues may look to replace Connor Goldson if he does not commit to a new contract.

Football Insider has been told by our columnist and finance expert Kieran Maguire that Rangers have £5-6million to spend under financial fair play rules.

Hutton admitted Rangers need to address their defensive issues after a poor start to the season in terms of goals conceded.

He suggested Goldson’s contract situation, with the 28-year-old’s terms set to expire next summer, could force the club’s hand in the transfer window.

Asked where Rangers need to strengthen, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s an interesting one. I mean, for me looking at it, Rangers have leaked far too many goals.

“You’re looking at Connor Goldson, is he going to sign a contract or isn’t he? That’s something that I think needs to be sorted out as soon as possible.

“If he decides his future is not there, you have to bring someone in, in my opinion, in January. He (Giovanni van Bronckhorst) wants to shore up that defence and I think that’s probably an area where you might look to strengthen.

“Everywhere else I think there’s strength in depth, there are options. But that centre-half position is probably one of the only ones that screams out to me that there is a situation.

“There is something happening that doesn’t seem quite right that needs to be put right. So I think might be an area [for January].”

Goldson has played in all but two of Rangers’ 24 games across all competitions this season.

Rangers also have Jack Simpson, Leon Balogun and the injured Filip Helander at centre-back.

Meanwhile, Nikola Katic is out on loan at Hajduk Split.
