Rangers expert rubbishes Giovanni van Bronckhorst's £200m claim

Alan Hutton has claimed the financial gap between Rangers and other European teams is not an excuse for poor performances in the Champions League.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have the ability to “beat anybody” on their day.

As quoted by the Daily Mail (8 September), Van Bronckhorst said it’s “too much to ask” of the Light Blues to compete with teams like Ajax and Liverpool.

The Gers boss insisted they can’t compete with the “£200million” Ajax have sold players for.

The Bears were beaten 4-0 by the Dutch side in the opening game of their Champions League group stage campaign last Wednesday (7 September).

They face Napoli in the next game of the group stage on Wednesday (14 September).

Hutton suggested Rangers’ success in Europe last year proves that they don’t need to spend big to do well.

“It’s his opinion but ultimately they have gone up against some of the biggest teams in European competitions and overcome them,” he told Football Insider.

I think it’s probably that straight after the games, emotions are running high and of course it’s a factor.

You can’t get away from it. Even last season, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, they had bigger budgets but we still managed to beat them. It’s a thing that’s there.

So I don’t think you can lean too much on that fact, it’s about who’s better on the night and unfortunately Ajax were miles in front of Rangers. It is down to them being able to spend money of course, they brought in a lot of players. But, on your day you can beat anybody and Rangers on that night simply were not good enough.
