Rangers fans will be buzzing as new Van Bronckhorst footage emerges - pundit

Rangers should appoint Giovanni van Bronckhorst because of his managerial CV and not because he used to play at Ibrox, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England defender claimed appointing a former manager would appease the fans but it is a “myth” it can help him be a success.

Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth reported yesterday (November 13) Van Bronckhorst had held “positive talks” with Rangers as he was spotted flying back to Holland.

Discussion took place in London as the Gers look to appoint a replacement for Steven Gerrard who quit the club to join Aston Villa last week.

“Sometimes it can be a bit of a myth about knowing the club,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s a young manager, he’s worked hard to get where he’s got. He will understand the magnitude, what it means for the fans.

“But the key factor is he’s got a decent amount of experience. That is the most important thing.

“He’s lived there before but the most important thing is he’s been a manager, he’s got that experience.

“It’s more to appease the fans, to get the fans on side when you appoint a player that’s been at the club. You can say ‘He knows what it means to the club, he knows how important it is’.

“I only played at Rangers once but I can tell you how important it is, I know what it means to those Rangers fans to beat Celtic.

“I’ve not been in that dressing room but I know from being around football and being around life, what it means.”
