Rabbi Matondo has been backed to return to the Rangers starting lineup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers defender Alan Hutton has been impressed by Matondo's recent performances for the Light Blues and likened him to Ryan Kent.

The 22-year-old started his first game for the Glasgow club since November 2022 in their 2-1 Viaplay Cup win over Greenock Morton.

Matondo was included in the squad for Wednesday's (22 August) Champions League play-off game against PSV Eindhoven where he came off the bench to score the Gers' second goal and help keep the tie all square for the away leg next week.

Michael Beale named a heavily changed side for the game against Morton on Saturday (19 August) including the youngster and B team star Johnly Yfeko.

When asked who impressed at the weekend, Hutton told Football Insider: "Matondo for me.

"I was at the game, I thought he deserved the opportunity to start. When he came on against Livingston he was excellent, he gives you something different that Rangers do not really have at the moment since they got rid of Kent.

"He has got the ability to drive at people and take people on and I was glad to see him included in the European squad for the PSV game because I think he deserved it."

The winger joined the club last summer from Schalke and put pen to paper on a six-year deal with the Glasgow club but has found a place in the starting lineup difficult to come by.
