Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers will have a plan A and plan B with James Sands' future.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side will either pay the transfer fee or spend the money on an alternative.

The 22-year-old joined the Ibrox club from New York City FC in January on a loan deal which will expire at the end of the season.

According to journalist Tom Bogert, reported in the Daily Record (7 June), Sands' release clause is just over £5million.

Sands has earned more minutes this season compared to last, in large part due to Van Bronckhorst's lengthy injury list.

Central defenders Connor Goldson, John Souttar, Filip Helander and Ben Davies are all sidelined and expected to be out until the new year.

Hutton suggested Rangers will be looking at their options when it comes to Sands.

"It is definitely a situation they will be thinking about at this moment in time," he told Football Insider.

Rangers

"I know it was a long loan, £4/5million I think is a lot of money if I am totally honest. He has come in and played his part, he has played a lot more than what I thought he would. That is obviously down to circumstances as well.

"I think they will be looking at both options. Whether they want to spend that sort of money on him or do they have other options. I think they will have a plan A and a plan B definitely moving forward."
