Rangers are plotting a new swoop for Everton defender Lewis Gibson after being knocked back ahead of the January window, Football Insider has learned.

The left footed defender, 19, completed a deadline-day loan move to Fleetwood Town last month, as first revealed by this site.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Rangers were among the clubs who enquired about taking Gibson for the second half of the campaign.

There remains strong interest from the Glasgow giants in Gibson, a technically gifted centre-back who Everton signed from Newcastle United in 2017.

That deal cost an initial £1million although it could rise to a potential £6m if all add-ons are achieved.

Gibson signed an extension to his Everton contract a fortnight ago - tying him to the club for two-and-a-half more years - before heading out to Fleetwood.

He has made a strong early impact for Joey Barton's side, with his first three matches all resulting in League One victories.

Everton are likely to loan out Gibson again next season, although they will have a look at him in the summer before making a decision.

He is regarded as a huge talent capable of establishing himself in their first team in the future.

But Everton recognise Gibson needs senior football to develop his game after outgrowing Under-23s football and that could provide an opening for Rangers.
