Sources: Man United set sights on signing Rangers sensation King as pre-January talks lined up

Man United and Newcastle United have set their sights on Rangers sensation Leon King ahead of the January window, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Glasgow giants were successful in seeing off Premier League interest in the rising star, 17, when he signed his first professional contract with the club in January of last year.

But Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that there is fresh doubt over the future of King.

He is out of contract next summer and could be prised from Ibrox for a compensation fee of around £250,000.

Man United and Newcastle United are both interested in opening cross-border talks with King over a pre-contract in January.

They could agree a deal ahead of the youngster becoming a free agent at the end of the season.

The pressure is now on Rangers to reach agreement on a new contract with a youngster who was highly regarded by Steven Gerrard.

The recently-departed former manager handed King his debut in November of last year aged 16 in a Scottish League Cup match against Falkirk.

He made his Scottish Premiership debut in May, replacing Joe Aribo in the 86th minute of a 3–0 away win against Livingston.

The club’s coaches regard King as a huge talent and they are convinced he can establish himself in the first team in the coming years.

Rangers are desperate to avoid a repeat of the situation in which Billy Gilmour quit in his mid-teens to join Chelsea three years ago.
