Djeidi Gassama played a major role as Rangers progressed to the third round of Champions League qualifiers with a 3-1 aggregate win over Panathinaikos.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man scored on his Bears debut as Russell Martin's men beat the Greek side 2-0 at Ibrox on 22 July.

Gassama was at the heart of the action for Rangers once more on Wednesday, 30 July, scoring an impressive equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Panathinaikos in Greece.

Martin's side face a two-legged tie with Viktoria Plzen in the third round of Champions League qualifiers, hosting the Czech club at Ibrox on Tuesday, 5 August.

Rangers will hope that Gassama can continue his rich vein of form on Saturday, 2 August, when they travel to Motherwell in their Scottish Premiership opener.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday's financial turmoil played into the Scottish Premiership giants' hands when they set their sights on the 21-year-old.

But even though Gassama performed well for the Owls, the winger's return of eight goals in 47 appearances across all competitions last term doesn't portray him as a prolific goalscorer.

If the starlet maintains his current run of form, he can establish himself as a talisman at Ibrox, which will delight the Rangers faithful.

Gassama's exploits in the Champions League, meanwhile, have given him a strong chance of featuring against Motherwell in the top flight on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Derek Ferguson has exclusively spoken to Ibrox News about the future of Rangers duo Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers.

After reaching the Europa League quarter-finals last season, the Ibrox giants will hope to enjoy a strong Champions League run this term.

Gassama has given his new club a strong platform to progress in Europe, and should cause the Viktoria Plzen backline problems next week.

Meanwhile, after the former Wednesday man scored in Greece on Wednesday, Rangers posted on X: "A perfect strike from Djeidi Gassama to send our travelling support wild! An instant impact from Gassama."

One supporter commented: "What a bargain, man, class finish too", while another said: "Thank god for this man."
