Birmingham City are lining up a new move for Rangers defender Jack Simpson, Football Insider understands.

The Championship club failed to land the 25-year-old on deadline day in the January window after running out of time to agree a deal.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Birmingham are still keen on Simpson and are keeping tabs on him ahead of the summer.

The centre-back is expected to make a return down south at the end of the season after talks with the Ibrox hierarchy over his future.

This comes after he was close to joining an English Championship club in January.

Birmingham, who are managed by Lee Bowyer, are 18th in the Championship table but 16 points clear of the relegation zone and well placed to be in the division next season.

Simpson has struggled to make an impression at Rangers since arriving from Bournemouth in January of last year.

He has made only 13 appearances for the club, six of which have come this season.

Filip Helander has missed most of the season due to injury but Simpson has still not made a matchday squad since a sub run-out against minnows Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup early last month.

He failed to make the matchday squad once again for last Saturday's 1-0 Scottish Premiership win over Aberdeen.

Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey are the first choice centre-backs, with January signing Jamie Sands and 18-year-old Leon King also ahead of Simpson in the pecking order.

Rangers have also planned for the future by signing John Souttar from Hearts on a pre-contract.
