Ex-Rangers and Ipswich Town striker Joe Garner is quitting Wigan Athletic mid-season after agreeing a shock move to the Indian Super League, Football Insider understands.

Garner, 32, has asked to be released early from his contract with the Latics that runs until the end of the season.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Wigan have given the green light for Garner to leave and complete a move to East Bengal in the ISL.

They are managed by Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, who recently lured Danny Fox and Anthony Pilkington to Bengal from Wigan.

Garner signed a 12-month contract extension days before Wigan were placed into administration in July.

He will leave at big hole at the DW Stadium as he is the club's top scorer this season with seven goals.

Garner has an impressive CV that includes a season at Rangers, who he joined in 2016 for £1.5million and left a year later to join Ipswich Town for £1m.

He scored 10 times for Mick McCarthy’s side in his 32 games and the feisty striker proved popular with Blues fans, before his move to Wigan in 2018.

At Rangers Garner is remembered for his committed style and temper, as well as a decent track record.

He scored 10 goals in 34 appearances for the Scottish giants.

Garner, who has also played for Nottingham Forest Watford, Carlisle United, Huddersfield Town and Scunthorpe United was at his most productive at Preston North End.

He played 151 times for the Championship club, scoring 57 goals.
