Rangers snubbed the chance to sign ex-Tottenham star Lewis Holtby when he was circulated to them as a free agent, Football Insider understands.

The 29-year-old has been available in recent weeks following his departure from Hamburg in the summer and Blackburn Rovers announced yesterday they had signed him on a two-year contract.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider the club were among the teams offered the chance to sign the three-times Germany international by agents both before and after the window shut.

But Rangers, who made an approach to sign Juventus legend Claudio Marchisio and are in the market for quality free agent signings, opted not to pursue a deal for Holtby.

The attacking midfielder, who turned 29 on Thursday, made his name in English football at Tottenham and also had a spell at Fulham.

He subsequently moved back to Germany and had lengthy and successful spells at top-flight clubs Hamburg and Schalke.

The versatile midfielder scored and assisted regularly for both clubs and his Bundesliga record includes 26 goals and 35 assists from 200 appearances.
