Whelan makes 'massive' claim as Kamara drops hint over Rangers future

Glen Kamara’s recent comments suggest he is set to stay at Rangers.

That is according to ex-Scottish Premiership forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 25-year-old star’s future at Ibrox.

Speaking to the Pallokerho podcast (via the Daily Record on 8th June), the midfielder appeared to pour cold water on speculation linking him with a move away from Ibrox.

“I’m not focused on anything else,” the Finland international revealed before adding “we [Rangers] want to go and retain the title.”

Kamara was one of Steven Gerrard’s side’s leading lights in 2020-21 and made 51 appearances across all competitions.

Whelan insists that Kamara’s comments show the “right mentality” and say a lot about Rangers as a club.

He told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Because they’ve won the title and won it so convincingly and done so well in Europe, that shows they can compete with the best teams.

“They are going to want to go a step further. Half of the challenge is raising the bar and retaining the title. That’s what drives players like him.

“If you have the right mentality then there is always something ahead of you and always something to achieve. Kamara is one of those players who was massive for Rangers in those midfield areas.

“So again, it just goes to show where they are at as a club that everyone wants to stay. They don’t want to go, they are happy and it’s massive for Rangers that Kamara wants to stay.”

Kamara is currently away on international duty with Finland at the European Championship.

He featured in their 1-0 win over Denmark on Saturday.
