The suggestions that one of Pedro Caixinha’s summer signings might be in the running for Rangers’ player of the season award would have been laughable at an early stage of the season.
The Portuguese flop saw a complete overhaul of the playing squad before the start of the current campaign, bringing in a host of unproven talent while shipping out the likes of Martyn Waghorn and Barrie McKay.
While those leaving might not have been the star men at Ibrox, they were proven performers in Scotland, and Caixinha’s gamble backfired massively as his new arrivals failed to hit the ground running – some still struggling to get into a light jog.
However, while the likes of Carlos Pena and Fabio Cardoso could – and should – be on their way out of Ibrox for failing to hit the grade, the same cannot be said about Daniel Candeias, who continues to star on the wing for the Light Blues.
His eight goals and 13 assists in his 39 domestic appearances is an impressive record, and the 30-year-old will no doubt be among those in the running for the club’s player of the year honour – an impressive feat in his first season in Scotland.
However, his dazzling performances, most recently scoring and assisting in the 2-1 win over Hearts on Sunday, could see him facing a stunning early exit from Ibrox – with there likely to be a whole host of suitors seeking his signing, both from England and abroad.
With a contract until 2020, the Gers might feel safe about avoiding the disappointment of his departure, but if he continues his rich vein of form, then Dave King may well have to be fielding calls all through summer – and if the price is right, he could be on his way.
In other Rangers news, Graeme Murty was left raving over this from last weekend’s Celtic clash.
