Rangers squad will be buzzing after 'great' news from Ibrox - Whelan

Noel Whelan has claimed the Rangers squad will be buzzing at the prospect of facing Real Madrid in pre-season.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the match would be an “exciting” occasion for players and fans alike.

As confirmed on Thursday (July 8th), Rangers will play host to the Spanish giants on July 25th.

It will be the Gers’ final pre-season game before they kick off the Premiership season at home to Livingston on July 31st.

Whelan insisted the Rangers dressing room would be seriously excited to go head to head with Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

He claimed it was a measure of how far the club has come to be luring such illustrious teams to Ibrox.

“What a great experience it will be for the players there,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“I’ve had the luxury of playing against Real Madrid twice, once at Leeds, once at Middlesbrough.

“Part of the Christian Karembeu sale to Middlesbrough, we got a game against them in Gibraltar. Unfortunately, I was marking Figo. That was my debut, left-wing against Figo.

“It’s a great experience, it’s a great test against one of the giants of football, isn’t it? What not to have a better football match in a pre-season friendly, and a warm-up game than Real Madrid?

“I mean how exciting is that for everybody. The fans will see how far the club’s come on, being able to tempt Real Madrid into these pre-season games.

“It’s a big test for the players which is what you want. This is where you measure yourself and how far you’ve come in your career.”

Rangers’ other pre-season fixtures will see them face Tranmere Rovers, Arsenal, Blackpool and Brighton.

They won their first warm-up game against Partick Thistle 1-0.

In other news, Nottingham Forest have agreed deal to sign player who has quit Rangers.
