Rangers’ players have been impressed by new signing Brandon Barker behind the scenes and are increasingly confident he will “terrorise” their opponents this season, Football Insider understands.
The summer signing from Manchester City has had to play catch-up with his fitness as he did not join until early August, by which point the club were already more than a month into their campaign.
A Rangers source has told Football Insider there is growing excitement among Steven Gerrard and his backroom staff, as well as the dressing room itself, about the potential of Barker and the added threat he will bring to their attack.
The left-winger, whose early progress at Ibrox had been held back by a knee problem, has been working hard on his fitness behind the scenes at Auchenhowie and this is starting to pay dividends as he is gradually being assimilated into the team.
The source explained there is confidence the 22-year-old can “terrorise” full-backs and defences with his dynamic attacking play.
Barker scored his first goal for Rangers on what was his second appearance, after coming on for the injured Ryan Kent in last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Livingston.
He also came off the bench to replace goalscoring hero Sheyi Ojo after 74 minutes of last night’s memorable Europa League 1-0 win over Feyenoord.
Barker has been signed to play on the left wing, where he played just a single match for Man City after graduating from their youth ranks.
He has had spells on loan at Hibernian, NAC Breda and Rotherham United, as well as at Preston North End, where he scored two goals and supplied two assists from his 20 matches last season.
