Sources: Rangers star expects to be told to find new club when he returns to Auchenhowie

Jamie Murphy is expecting to be told to find a new club when he returns to Rangers pre-season training, Football Insider understands.

The winger, 30, revived his career with his January loan move to the English League One club Burton Albion.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Murphy does not anticipate his stellar form in the English third tier pre-lockdown will be enough to bring him back into the first-team reckoning at Ibrox.

The wide man will be assessed when Steven Gerrard and his staff when the senior stars head back to Auchenhowie this month.

Murphy will be among the group after his Burton loan came to an end when League One was curtailed earlier this week.

The forward has just over a year remaining on a lucrative contract signed when he completed a £1million move from Brighton in 2018.

But he expects to be surplus to requirements as Gerrard continues to overhaul the squad following the dramatic downturn in the second half of 2019-20.

Rangers have already signed two new players this summer, with Ianis Hagi signed for an initial £3million and left-back Calvin Bassey recruited from Leicester City on a pre-contract agreement.

Hagi tends to operate on the right of the front three, rather than the left like Murphy does.

But the two-times Scotland international expects to move on when the window opens, either permanently or on a new loan.

He will certainly not be short of interest after starting 10 consecutive league matches at Burton prior to the lockdown, scoring seven goals and supplying two assists.

He was initially a regular when Gerrard took over as manager but has not made a single start for the club since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on Kilmarnock’s plastic pitch in August 2018.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club have agreed signing of Premier League sensation but deal may not complete until August.
