Exclusive: Hutton tips Gerrard to axe senior star v St Johnstone after update from Ibrox

Alan Hutton has tipped Steven Gerrard to axe Jon McLaughlin for Allan McGregor from the Rangers starting XI versus St Johnstone on Wednesday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers defender and boyhood fan believes the 38-year-old is still the manager’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The veteran shot-stopper missed Sunday’s 3-0 win over St Mirren but, as quoted by the Glasgow Times, Gerrard confirmed he was likely to be available for Wednesday’s clash at Ibrox.

McLaughlin, who joined the Gers on a free transfer this summer after he left Sunderland, stepped in to make his debut for the Glasgow giants.

Hutton admits it will be difficult for Gerrard to drop the 32-year-old after his clean sheet over the weekend but that McGregor is likely to return to the line-up regardless.

“It’s a difficult one, as a footballer when you’re playing and the team do well and have a clean sheet, especially the defender, I presume the goalkeeper too, does he want to change it?” Hutton told Football Insider.

“I still think Gerrard sees McGregor as his number one so I do think he’ll come back in if he’s fit and well. I believe McGregor’s out in front for the number one spot.”

McGregor missed just five games last season as he played a total of 49 times for Rangers.

McLaughlin meanwhile was first-choice at Sunderland last season and featured 35 times for the League One outfit.

In other Rangers news, Sunderland and Joey Barton are in the hunt to sign a defender who has quit Ibrox.
