Alan Hutton has urged Rangers to keep pace with "impressive" Celtic by strengthening their squad in the final days of the transfer window.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Ibrox club will have to go into the market "if they want to stay on top".

As quoted by the Daily Record on 20 January, Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst admitted "anything can happen" in the remainder of the transfer window.

The Ibrox club have had a muted window thus far, bringing in USA international James Sands on loan and securing a pre-contract deal for Hearts defender John Souttar.

Hutton insisted Rangers will dip into the market again if there is "a deal to be had".

“I think Rangers are quite strong at the moment,” he told Football Insider's Russell Edge.

“However, as I always say – you can never stand still. I watched Celtic this week, with their new signings, and they were impressive.

“They’re strengthening and I think Rangers have to do the same if they want to stay on top.

“If you look at Nathan Patterson leaving, if anything happens to James Tavernier injury-wise – there will be a really bad situation.

“Centre-half is another area where there has been problems, and there’s obviously contract issues with Leon Balogun and Connor Goldson.

“There’s always room to improve the squad, but he’s right – there’s no point rushing into things. If there’s a deal to be had, and something comes up that makes them stronger, I’m sure they’ll do it.”

Rangers

Rangers' Old Firm rivals Celtic have brought in no fewer than five new faces this month.

The Ibrox club lead the Hoops by four points atop the Scottish Premiership.
