Rangers tipped to offer Defoe new role after big news out of Ibrox - Phillips
Kevin Phillips claims Rangers want to keep Jermain Defoe at Ibrox to help Fashion Sakala learn the ropes.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists it makes sense for Rangers to keep Defoe on.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Steven Gerrard confirmed Defoe is ‘in talks’ over a new Ibrox deal with his contract set to expire this summer.
However, as revealed by Football Insider, Defoe would have to take a major pay cut to reflect his new role at Ibrox.
Last week, Rangers confirmed the pre-contract capture of Fashion Sakala from Belgian side KV Oostende.
Phillips claims Rangers may keep Defoe on as a striking coach in an effort to make sure Sakala hits the ground running.

“It sounds like they’re talking about an extension,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“Maybe they want to keep Jermain around the club to help with this young player.
“To help him settle in and show him the ropes. There might be a striker coaching role for Jermain there.
“It makes sense for him. Why would you not? He’s one of the best Premier League strikers of all time.
“If you have him there, use him. He’s done very well up there and if he wants to move on you shake his hand, say well done and part ways.”
Defoe, 38, scored his sixth goal of the season in last weekend’s Old Firm win over Celtic.
He first joined Rangers on loan from Bournemouth in January 2019 before making the move permanent.
