Rangers TV pundit tips Gerrard to 'pull trigger early' to agree pre-January deal for Blackburn 'standout' Rothwell
Alan Hutton has tipped Rangers to “pull the trigger early” to beat rivals to the signing of Blackburn Rovers midfielder Joe Rothwell ahead of January.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Ibrox defender suggested Steven Gerrard would want a deal done as early as possible.
As reported by the Sun (2nd October), Rangers are leading the race to sign Rothwell and plan to strike early in the January transfer window.
The midfielder is out of contract next summer, meaning he can sign a pre-contract with a club outside England in January.
However, Rovers are reportedly looking to sell the Manchester United academy product rather than risk losing him on a free.
As revealed by Football Insider in August, Premier League new boys Brentford, who currently sit seventh, were keen on signing Rothwell this summer.

However, he remained at Ewood Park past deadline day.
Hutton suggested Rangers would move swiftly to get him on board before any other clubs can strike a deal.
“He was obviously one of the standout performers last season at Blackburn,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“It doesn’t surprise me that they’re keeping an eye on him. They could go and try and pull the trigger early doors before January to try and get something over the line before any other team comes in…
“I know there will obviously be more than Rangers that are keeping an eye on his situation. It’s the way Rangers are, the way Steven Gerrard is.
“He never wants to stand still, he always wants to move forward. Get the next player through the door that can enhance the team he’s already got.
“At a big club, there’s always going to be competition for places. That’s just the way it is and every player knows that.
“It’s yet another new face but hopefully it’s not just about numbers, it’s about adding quality.”
