Rangers to land 'incredible' Gerrard compensation from Newcastle after Sky update - pundit
Kevin Phillips has claimed Rangers could be handed an “offer they can’t refuse” by Newcastle for manager Steven Gerrard.
The former Sunderland hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Gers chiefs will be worried about a potential approach for the 41-year-old.
A Newcastle source told Football Insider on Wednesday (13th October) that the newly acquired club had made Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers their top managerial target.
However, Sky Sports reported (October 13th) that Rodgers has no interest in the role.
Attentions could now turn elsewhere, with Football Insider revealing (October 12th) that Gerrard was part of Newcastle’s initial shortlist.
Phillips insisted Rangers’ “financial problems” could play a part should the Tyneside club offer significant compensation for the Englishman.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Naturally, the Rangers board will be worried.
“The job Gerrard has done with the club has been incredible – what a turnaround.
“They’re not daft – I think we all know he will move on to the Premier League at some point.
“It seemed like he was going to hold out for the job at Liverpool.
“But now with the money being pumped into Newcastle – that might be an offer Rangers and Gerrard can’t refuse if they offer enough compensation.”
“We know the problems are there for Rangers financially.
“That’s just the way it is – it will be interesting to see what he does.
Steve Bruce remains in the Newcastle post at present.
However, the Magpies’ new custodians are planning to relieve him of his duties in due course.
Gerrard and Rangers secured a historic Scottish Premiership title last term after ending the season unbeaten.
