Rangers are on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign up West Brom forward Tyler Roberts when his contract expires at the end of the season, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claims that the Light Blues are closing in on an agreement with Roberts, 19, after initially approaching the Premier League club in December about a loan deal.
Roberts has spent the first half of the season on loan at Walsall, but is due to return to the Hawthorns later this month and he is free to leave the West Midlands club at the end of the campaign when his contract expires.
It is understood that Rangers can snap up the explosive striker, known for his pace, on a permanent deal for a compensation fee worth £300,000 and the report adds that a number of English Championship clubs are interested in signing him, as well as Ligue 1 giants Marseille.
The Wales Under-21 international has made 19 appearances across all competitions for Walsall this term, scoring five goals in the process.
He has only ever made one appearance in the West Brom first-team since emerging from their youth academy.
Football Insider verdict
Roberts is a very good young player and would be a great addition at Ibrox. West Brom fans are desperate to not see the young Welsh forward leave the Hawthorns because of the great amount of potential he has, which proves that the Gers are on the verge of snapping up a really promising talent. Roberts’ goalscoring record with Walsall has not been too good, but the Saddlers have not been playing too well as a team in League One this season. Instead of looking at his previous stats, Rangers fans should really just be excited about getting one of the Premier League’s most exciting young talents.
