Rangers are very keen on signing Wigan Athletic playmaker Nick Powell this summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Sun transfer expert Alan Nixon reported in a Twitter exchange with an Ibrox fan that the club are in hot pursuit of the former Manchester United man ahead of the summer window.

Asked if Rangers are still interested in a player whose contract at Wigan ends in June, the journalist replied, “Yes. Very”.

Football Insider verdict:

Powell was the most highly-rated English player in his age group when Man United beat off interest from Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham to sign him in the summer of 2012 for an initial £4million. Indeed, Sir Alex Ferguson hailed him as someone who “will fill Paul Scholes’s boots”, a remarkable claim that Powell came nowhere near to living up to. Amid rumours his time-keeping and attitude was nowhere near the level expected of a United player, he left for nothing in the summer of 2016. Powell has subsequently matured and reignited his career at Wigan, where he has emerged as one of the outstanding attacking midfielders outside of the Premier League. Indeed, the 25-year-old’s class and vision mark him out as a player capable of returning to the top flight. No wonder Rangers are interested. Powell will be one of the most in-demand free agents in the market this summer, and the competition to sign him will be intense.
