Roofe backed to explode next season amid 'massive' Rangers dressing room claim - Whelan

Kemar Roofe will have a prolific season in 2020-21 and be a “massive” influence in the Rangers dressing room.

That is according to ex-Leeds United and Scottish Premiership striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Roofe‘s brace in the 4-0 win over Cove in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.

Rangers signed Roofe, 28, from Anderlecht on a four-year deal in August.

The forward’s two goals on Sunday took his season tally to 14 in 29 appearances across all competitions.

But Whelan claims the best is still yet to come from the ex-Leeds man.

He told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “When you’ve got a goalscorer banging them in, it gives the rest of the team faith. That’s massive for the dressing room.

“I think we’ll see the best of him next season. Sometimes it takes a year to bed in but he’s still scored goals. That what he does.

“He doesn’t need many opportunities and at that level you would expect him to be scoring goals week in, week out.

“It was a cup match on Sunday but you’ve still got to do your job. Every striker just wants to score, no matter what game it is or what competition it is because it sets you up for the next game.

“He just needs to find some consistency. I’m sure next season he’ll be a lot better. Sometimes you learn a lot about yourself in a new league. But let’s be honest, he’s not had a bad season.”

Rangers’ victory on Sunday set up a fourth round tie with Celtic on 17 April.

Steven Gerrard’s side will be looking to make it a league and cup double after mathematically securing the Scottish Premiership title in early March.
